The IX Araucanía Region is the heartland of the indigenous Mapuche people who resisted both Inca and
Spanish conquest attempts. The main features of this region are its impressively beautiful, evergreen
landscape and the traditions inherited from the Mapuche people.
Thousands of tourists come all year round, thanks to the area’s high-standard infrastructure. The largest lake is Villarrica, at the foot of the volcano of that name. On its banks are Pucón and Villarrica, where in summer, the beaches of volcanic sand are crowded, while colorful sailing boats dot the water. Amenities range from a casino at Pucón to hot springs, adventure trails, and ski resorts that extend down the sides of volcanoes.
The capital is Temuco.
