The XII Magallanes Region extends across two continents, with one foot in America and the
other in Antarctica. It marks Chile’s southern boundary, has its coldest climate, and includes the only
natural sea routes between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans – the Straits of Magellan and the Drake Passage.
This region has many globally known places and geographical features including Torres del Paine, Cape Horn, Tierra del Fuego island, and the Strait of Magellan. It also includes the Antarctic territory claimed by Chile.
The low population and vastness makes this region a good place for observing many plant species and native animals like penguins, ñandus, guanacos and condors. The capital is Punta Arenas.
